Watercooler: Rock County has a Problem with Pit Bulls--Should they be banned as a hazard to Public Safety?

Dan Hinkel of the Janesville Gazette (click post above) reports that half of the animals at the Rock County Humane Society are pit bulls, and that the pattern of mixes they are seeing indicates that underground dog fighting is happening.

What are your thoughts on this Rock County problem? Should pit bulls be banned as a public safety hazard?

No Pit Bulls should not be banned! STUPID people should be banned.
People who use and abuse animals need to be investigated and prosecuted. The sentencing needs to be commesurate with the crime.
You can go to the RCHS website and see there are many PB'S are available. Not half though. Dogs suspected of fighting are not usually adoptable.
Pitts are not the only dogs that do damage to humans.
That woman in Cal was mauled by Canaries, (not the bird)

Some insurances will not insure a home if there is a PB present.

I agree and disagree. I agree that the dogs are not to blame here. Breeders and owners taking part in fighting should be charged. Other people that have a PB could, like any dog they might have, have it for the wrong reasons. They may have thought it would be "cool" to have a PB. There is some responsibility involved with any dog and some people are just lazy about training.

What I disagree with is the spelling of the word "commensurate" in the first two posts.

A pit bull ban would be impractical.
This type of ban is almost impossible to enforce, as there are several breeds that closely resemble pit bulls. (staffordshire terriers, american bulldogs, english bulldogs, Basenjis, just to name a few) It is hard for an LE agency to prove the integrity of an animal's bloodline.
The reason that pit bulls are at the Humane society is NOT because of undue aggression. They are there because young stupid adults were not ready to own a dog, and found out owning a pit bull doesn't make you look like Eminem.

I think to many people adopt a dog/cat not considering, they live normally any where from 10-15 years or more. Our cat was 22 years when she passed. Broke our hearts but at least we knew we had given her a good life, and she knew we loved her.
