City denies Sandwich Signs--- businesses struggle

The yellow and black sandwich signs of Real Coffee at the corner of Main and Madison streets have become a symbol in Evansville that the downtown is still open----but the City Council recently denied approval of their use.

Danielle has written a nice article in the Janesville Gazette on this problem. Click on the post to read the article. What do you think on this issue? Is a little flexibility during times of construction distress in order? Should these type of signs be able to be used on a regular basis?

You make the call. The comment line is open.

I think the sandwich signs shoud be used at all times as Real Coffee really is not on the main drag anymore. Pretty soon it will be a ghost town when Ace moves out past McDonald's. We need more of a variety anyway. Why block everything from people making an honest living? They want you to keep your business in town, then give us something stay here for. The signs get my vote.

I think we have to also remember that we are not Madison , and west main is not State St. My point being is State St. in Madison looks trashy, and crowded. I think if they do allow these signs it need only be until the construction is done in Oct., and even then there needs to be restrictions on things like size, how many each bus. can have and need to be placed so people don't have to weave aroumd them with walking. These business's want to cry such hard ship, but they knew it was coming ( the construction)
and I don't think enough of them did enough soon enough. It is already Augest, it is scheduled to be done by Oct, 2 months. One would also wonder if its not all about construction but people in general are learning what these business offer and what they don't and are choosing to go else where. If I need something from one of these fine business's construction will not stop me.

Any city official who is out there,
You may have denied the down town bus. of signs but why do RINGHANDS
have a sign on Water St? saying they are open. IT is not even a nice sign, very crudely done. I think they should be allowed signs until construction is done, but fair is fair if the downtown area can not have them, either can RINGHANDS. Mayor RINGHAND should have known better, or maybe she did.
