Mayor Ringhand and Administrator Bill OConnors, as well as ward aldermen, John Sornson and Dennis Wessels met with 4th Ward citizens at Franklin Park on Wed, July 13, 2005. Lots of food and ideas were shared.
The City brought Mrs. Coats of the Housing Authority to talk about the low cost loan programs that are available to residents to improve their homes since the area from Union and Main to Curves has been labeled residential in the Smart Growth Plan recently enacted. Information was also presented about programs from Community Action.
Residents had questions about everything from tree planting to assessments and also complaints about the lack of grading on Franklin St. that has damaged their cars.
The big news here is that the citizens and city officials showed up. As one citizen put it, " We need to regain the faith in our government, again." It is going to happen one small step at a time. Wednesday night was a good beginning. Thanks to all for bringing food and to those who went door to door to remind folks.

Thanks to Mayor Ringhand and Bill Connors.
ReplyDeleteThis was the first in a series of 4 or five potluck gatherings that will be held.
The objective is to bring your ideas and future vision for our ward.
We will be actively looking at ways to improve the appearance of the gateway area. If you are interested in having a hitching post and flag please let me know. We are going to be ordering the first batch of 12 and they are all taken. We can order a second batch any time.
You will need to make the purchase of the hitching posts and flags but they will be installed for you by volunteers.
There are folks on Franklin that have requested them as well so it is not only for E. Main.
Cherry and Almeron streets already have quite a few.
Please send your ideas for the grand opening as well. This will be an excellent opportunity to have a giant block party! But we need your feedback!
Horse head hitching posts and flags. Where can I get in line to get mine? Seems like it’s the hot new fad in the gateway region and now I hear even beyond…
ReplyDeleteWhen the wheel falls off my car due to the large pothole that I hit, I’m sure that it will be very beneficial to the tow truck when I tell them that it was the 8th horse head hitching post… the one with the Nascar flag. They are going to be Nascar flags, right?
Horse heads are a great idea though. When the mob comes through, the message will be loud and clear…
Someone was talked into horse head hitching posts and flags in lieu of amenities that would maybe make a person say, “wow, this is a beautiful gateway to the downtown”.
I have some snake oil for sale if anyone is interested. You’ll have to pay for it but a volunteer will administer it for you.
anony, I would feel bad for you if it was not for the fact that you have so much negative attitude you feel the need to spread it around. You negative attitude will get you know where. If you don't care to make a change thats fine, but don't think for a moment you are going to drag us into the hole you have dug for your self. So crawl on in and cover up.

ReplyDeleteTo anony, we had issues with the city as well, but your whining and lack of action is old. Nobody cares if you want to see there and whine, like a spoiled brat. If you would like to take part if the change we would be glad to have you. Just like you can't complain if you don't vote, you can't complain if you don't work for change. Get over your self.

Anon, You don't like the ideas that the residents have come up with so far then, bring your own.
ReplyDeleteThe object of sprucing up the neighborhood is not a city activity.
It is a neighborhood activity.
Don't think for a minute that we like not having access to our drive ways muchless our homes.
No water, electric, the dirt is at times unbearable.
We are all in the same boat. It is temporary and when it is done it will be better than before.
As for the snake oil, you already have way to much venomn.
Actually, the idea really was that we want the residential area to stay residential BECAUSE we are investing in our homes and neighborhood. The area is beautiful and can stay that way better if it is not a commercial area. Anybody who is struggling with car repairs and other things is just like all of us. You don't need a horse head in the front yard to be a welcome and appreciated neighborhood member. But, if anyone is ahead of the game on the car repairs, and wants to add trees and flowers to the view, or a horsehead, we want that to be possible too.
ReplyDeleteNow, Anonymous Sir with the wheel problems, you have not said yet, besides no pot holes, what other amenities do you think we need for someone to say "wow" this is a beautiful gateway to the downtown.
We were able to make the case regarding smart growth that certain areas remain residential and not be turned in to mixed use.
ReplyDeleteThat could change since the plan is reviewed annually.
I think you are some what confused on the hitching post issue.
The hitching post and flags were a idea to unify the apperance of the neighborhood starting with the gateway area.
If your vehicle has been damaged due to the construction then submit a claim.
If it was damaged on E. Main or Union the claim goes to Tara Seaman
If it was damaged on Exchange the claim goes to Bill Connors.
I do have a comment to make, not quite on topic but felt it was worth bringing up. I always hear city officials preaching, shop in town. Well I am sick and tired of trying to shop in town just to go to the place of bus. and have them not be open despite a sign that states it hours, and that is should be open but its not. Off to walmart I went , not only got it cheaper but with less frustration.
