At Monday night's Evansville Planning Commission meeting, the subject of external outdoor furnaces was reviewed. It had been thought at the previous meeting that with some restrictions as to distance from a lot line etc., these would be allowed, since in fact, there had been some City participation through Focus on Energy in financing several units.
However, after listening to Karen Aikman present evidence regarding the hazards to public health from these types of furnaces, plus the testimony of local heating contractors and insurance professionals, the planning commission turned 180 degrees and is inclined to ban them within the city limits since this is the normal handling throughout the nation. These types of furnaces are NOT the same high efficiency as the ones inside homes that burn wood or corn. They are relatively low efficiency and emit pollution that is hazardous in dense civilian areas. In rural areas, they may be fine, but since the chimneys are low, they are hazardous in the city.
Two alderman have agreed to sponsor an ordinance banning these types of furnaces within the city limits.

I have been to several planning commission meetings where it is very clear that Karen Aikman does her homework and has no problem stating her opinion, regardless if everyone else goes the other way. I am impressed and glad to see her running for Mayor.
