"Little Boxes" by Melvina Reynolds,1962 sung by Pete Seeger

(This is just a little nostalgia for all you aging baby boomers. There is a section of Berkely where there are identical houses that our family thinks the idea came from for this song. Maybe you have your own idea of where it came from. There is a debate among the locals whether the Observer should sing this on the audio or maybe one of you would like to. If you search on Pete Seegar there is a short sample of the melody. Enjoy.)

Little Boxes

LIttle boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
LIttle boxes on the hillside
Little Boxes all the same,
there's a green one and a pink one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses
All went to the university
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same
And there's doctors and lawyers
And business executives,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
and they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry,
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school,
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they are put in boxes
And they all come out the same.

And the boys go into business
And marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

I lived in the Bay Area from 1970-82, and I was always told this song refers to Daly City. You can see the rows and rows of pastel houses on the hills as you drive south out of San Francisco. The houses in Berkeley that fit this description are on the "flats" heading down to the Bay, not the hills. The Berkeley Hills are full of Arts and Crafts wonders.
