The disturbing thing here is his remarks regarding the failed vote of 5-2...

The idea of stacking a Council or committee to get what you want is growing in practice and acceptance.
Smokeless environment? At least a good majority of the council in Fitchburg know that a business owner can run their own business. I do not understand how a government can tell a business owner that they cannot do something that is completely legal.
ReplyDeleteI think the issue here really is smoker's need to quit thinking they have the ' right' to endanger other people ,, because they want to smoke. Want to smoke , stay home. These things may take a while to push through, but they will happen.
ReplyDeleteBig plans from an unplanned community. Fichburg incorporated in a spite move to stop Madison from annexing. They had no schools, little shopping and a bare minimum of governmental structure. Now that they are a poster child for sprawl and unplanned developement it's a little late to be planning.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness that Evansville has a Smart Growth Plan that will keep us from blowing out development targets and sprawling the way Fitchburg has.

ReplyDeleteI to don't smoke, and have the right to go out for supper with out having to deal with cigarette smoke. I don't go to bars just for the fact, I dont' go to bars for the fact I dont' care for the smoke. But anony is correct to many smokers think it is their' right' and it is not. It's to bad so many business owners are willing to sacrifice the health of many, all for a buck, what does that make them? Times are changing , things will change.
ReplyDeletewhat are you talking about, you do not have the right to go into another persons establishment and tell the owner of a restaurant, bar, etc. there should be no smoke there. I will put it simple go to a location that does not have smoke quit pushing your beliefs on other people
ReplyDeleteThose are a lot of "rights" you're espousing. At the moment everyone in ANY establishment is a guest of the owner. It doesn't really come with "rights". Bars don't provide drinks for our pleasure, they do it for money. It's all about money. If there was more money in running a smoke free environment, you can be sure smoking would be banned by the proprietors.
ReplyDeleteRather than forcing one view over another, ask your favorite establishment to offer a smoke free evening so you and your smoke free friends can live it up! If it becomes a money maker, you will have your smoke free world, that's for sure!

To the last anony, I think that is a very good idea, but how many establishments would really do that? They seem to be more concerned over making a buck, than the health of all their customers. This is no longer a issue of maybe cig. smoke is bad for those around us, it is a known fact that it is, and thats what gives city gov. the right, they have to think about everyone. If the gov. was trying to ban cigs. all together than yes go ahead get your self all workded in to tizzy, you have the right to do what you want in your home, your yard, your car. Not out in areas where it involves other people.

ReplyDeleteYou want to say you have the right to run your business as you please however yes and No. You are within city limits, you have to abide by their ordinaces.
The city/township has and does have the right to :
Set limits on hours of operation (mostly applys to bars)
2. Tell you the max. amount of people you can have in your establishment. Tell you how many fire exits you must have. Even in some citys how far the bathroom has to be from the kitchen. The min. age someone can be to be hired.
3. Tell you what hours you may serve alcohol
4. Tell you how much tax you will charge.
5. Set limits on how large your establishment can be.
6. Tell you if you are allowed to have cig. smoking in your establishment. So in many ways, not just the few I listed, they do tell you what you can and can't do.
7. If you can't make a buck without allowing smoking, maybe its time for a career change, there will always be another business of one kind or another willing to take your spot.
