In the notes of the Evansville Park Board for June 19:
"3. Citizen appearances other than agenda items:
a. Alderperson Doug Wessels and resident Ayn Steinlein, spoke regarding a dog park. Minimum space requirements are roughly the size of a football field. Needs to be fenced. Benches and trash disposal facilities would be nice. Wessels stated that over the years roughly a dozen sites have been proposed and shot down for one reason or another. Without a definite site in mind, it’s hard to work up enthusiasm for fund-raising. The PRB needs to take another look at possible sites and see if something can be made to work. Juergens requested that Dog Park proponents help by coming to PRB in the future with definite suggestions of possible sites."

When i talked with Bill Connors about this there were some very good reasons at to why these locations were not going to work. I guess my question to the park board and city would be if the right opportunity(meaning price) be willing to pay for part of a piece of land and let these people who want this dog park raise the rest?

ReplyDeleteThe dog park and skate park are two seperate things. I have kids and dogs and won't use either one. So I should be the one upset, tax money going for either one. But kids are always going to come before something for dogs. A big issue with the skate park is there are quite a few kids who attempt to skate and skate board in places they should not and that are not safe. This town has absolutely nothing for the kids, really sad to see gravity zone go. People and their dogs can walk anywhere, go to nearby dog parks, or do what alot of people do and fence in your back yard so that you have running room for your dogs. Very much two different things. The mention of the group paying for part of the land was a idea being some of these other suggestions are not very good locations, you may have to do more to get what you want. I think the city is being very generous is they give you anything money or land. Your 'project' is going to be worth alot more with the land than the skate park.It also takes alot more room. I think there are just to many people who want things given to them, and you may have to bend. Not take the attitude all or nothing. The other issue I am sure that will get brought up, is liability and working in insurance, I can tell you for a fact we get alot more dog bite claims, than skate board/skating injurys. I am not overly concerned if it happens or not, just don't go comparing the two, kids will always come first.
ReplyDeleteNow fred, don't assume that all 'dog loving' people feel the need for the dog park. Or that those of us who do not feel the need for one don't love our dogs. Some us who have dogs just realize and can acknowledge that we got our dogs knowing this city did not have a dog park, and have found plenty of ways to entertain our dogs without one. Its not that hard. On the other hand its not going to be so easy to find a good spot for that dog park, without possibly buying the land. Which is going to cost $$$$$$
