The Observer joins all Evansville residents in mourning the passing of Vivian Gildner, Publisher of The Evansville Review. Vivian penned her own history---it is available on newstands in the latest Evansville Review. Getting the story straight, even the last story, was always important to Vivian.
The dream of every publisher, writer, and yes observer, is to be a successful publisher and be prosperous in every way till a very ripe age. Vivian lived that dream. While the facts of her life are listed in her story, what I will miss is the flash of her smile and the natural charm that she used when meeting the public. Each person in Evansville has a Vivian story. Even the Observer.
Soon after the very first post of The Observer, I stopped in to the Review office to place a classified ad. A very short ad. It just said, The Evansville Observer, News, Comment, and Discussion. www.evansvilleobserver.blogspot.com
Vivan was on duty that day. After reviewing the ad, she said, 'That's a pretty short ad. Are you sure you don't want more in it?"
"Nope," I replied. "That's all I need."
"Are you sure that is not the Evansville Review you mean here, " as she pointed to the "Observer" word.
"No," I explained, "This is a computer thing...something new."
"O.K"., she said. "You have to understand. I need to get the story straight."
And then she smiled her wonderful smile.

What a kind blog.
ReplyDeleteI feel very privileged to work in a community where the various media can sit side by side and work together, be allies rather than adversaries, knowing that we each have different approaches and different ways to reach our audiences.
