The FROG group, Fontana Residents for Open Government, had obtained a court ordered injunction to prevent the city from proceeding with projects under their TIF district which the city had engineered to be under the 1 million dollar limit that by city ordinance had to go to referendum.
What are your thoughts on the Fontana dispute? Should projects that exceed 1 million in gross project cost be subject to referendum here in Evansville? Should this ordinance issue be put to a direct legislative referendum?

Yes I think they should. I think the city has for quite sometime, made sure that projects fall under the 'caps' so they don't have to ask the taxpaying citizens for their opinion on these projects.
ReplyDeleteBill we are not talking about city council, the city council represents a very small percent of the citizens of Evansville. They do not represent their districts, I never see my alderpersons. Never hear from them at all. Even when you seek them out, they vote how they want regardless of our input. The question was not should the city council being approving this. The subject was should these issues tif districts, be going to a city wide vote.? Yes they should, alot of people are not aware of the amount of TAX PAYER money that is being thrown at these business's and contractors. They do not know the risks. If there was a city wide vote, I bet people would be alot better informed. As things are now the only publication you do of the Tif districts in the agenda and maybe mention it in your weekly column, which alot of people don't even get the paper. You put it in your column so you can say you did, this little paragraph that does not even begin to discuss the real issue of the tif district. Times are changing, I think just the election results from the primary show that, I am not so sure this is so far off, much to your dismay I am sure.
ReplyDeleteWhat I meant referring to the the primary election results was I would of thought Karen Aikman would have done better, which makes me believe people are looking for change.
