The following is from the City of Evansville web site regarding upcoming meetings:
"At 6:00 PM on Monday, May 22, 2006, the Public Works Committee will hold a public hearing regarding Ordinances #2006-12, #2006-13, #2006-14, and #2006-15, which would amend the Municipal Code relative to stop sign locations. These ordinances would authorize the placement of additional stop signs at the following intersections: Fifth Street and West Main Street, Fifth Street and Badger Drive, Higgins Drive and Badger Drive, Sixth Street and Vision Drive, and Brown School Road and J. Lindemann Drive. "

Really now, doesn't Evansville have enough stop signs as it is? I know others share my frustration; I here the same tired complaint from those used to traveling in Madison and beyond. We needn't spend money so that every corner in Evansville is a three or four way controlled stop. Perhaps I am being a bit brash, it is possible that the Public Works Committee is merely looking out for our safety... after all, it is so very difficult to yield right of way when you're chatting on you cell phone.
ReplyDeleteI think the stop signs are a good idea I can tell you from living on the busiest street in town, to often people are going way to fast to just stop, in a emergency. I wish they could put stop signs on east main, about every 20 feet, that would slow people down.
ReplyDeleteThe only NEEDED stop signs are on the corner of Vision and S. Sixth and the where S. Sixth T's into Old 92. Those other locations are wastes of time. The city doesn't even need to buy new signs, just go to Porter and N. Sixth and take that STOP sign down. What's up with that? I think someone influential has stock in a traffic sign business. Maybe the city should put speed bumps every 50 feet on all paved roads. Even better when the feds are listening to my phone conversation, they can play subliminal messages telling me to obey the speed limit and donate to the GOP. God Speed.
ReplyDeleteThe developer of the area where S. Sixth and Vision St. intersect should be responsible for all costs associated with that stop sign. Mr. Connors just cited the reason for the needed stop sign there was because of the " General Lee Jump" on S. Sixth. Since the Developer failed to properly comply with the city's approved master drainage plan in the first place, the city pulled a Rube Goldberg and put "another" trench in that lovely westside subdivision. I love how the city is Mcfly to the developers Biff.
ReplyDeleteI find it ever so encouraging knowing that the same individual is now working on another city of Evansville subdivision even though I had the city engineer's own word that he would not be allowed to develop in Evansville again. If you don't believe me walk west on the sidewalk on Abey Dr., about 100 feet before S. Sixth St. the side walk has been intentionally dropped into a V shape to allow water to drain across the side walk due to the developer leaving the lots almost two feet below the spec'd amount. But hey, we're in good hands here folks. Tax dollars efficiently at work. I would give more examples but I'm depressing myself.
Mr. Connors I realize the city does not have the authority. We went through all that with the road construction. It was meant as a joke, HOWEVER there is absolutely no reason the city can not do more to control the speed and make sure people are going the speed limit. There are young kids in this area, just like in country side. When country side complained about traffic issues they got help. We have never gotten any help. I thought thats what the police dept was for, I must have been mistaken on that. By the way over a dozen of us field out complaint forms and turned them into the police dept at the time, and not a thing was done.
ReplyDeleteHaving moved to Evansville a year ago and living on the west side (Campion) I haven't noticed too much speeding or accidents. I would suggest looking at fixing the divet on West Main instead of putting a stop sign there. What a giant disgrace to a beautiful main street. If asked what is the worse thing about Evansville I would say the ONLY thing is that road problem. Of course, I love Evansvile. Trust me, it could be worse!!!
