Nostalgia: 2006::School Beat: Monroe: Open Enrollment loss 71; Gain 450; Some parents choose Virtual because NCLB leaves High Achievers Behind

Monroe Schools recently did an analysis on why students, specifically 71 students of 43 families left, or indicated leaving under open enrollment. Click on the post for the full story in the Monroe Times.

Also interesting was the analysis of the 450 students that indicated an interest in coming to Monroe under the Virtual School option. Some students were high achievers that felt that NCLB had in fact left them behind.

Enjoy.

  1. I think school districts face alot of different issues anymore and its hard to keep up with all the reasons for why things happen. I think the No child left behind program is a good thing but also has alot of problems. First of all the money and the time the schools spend on this. Second, not all kids are tested with this, the schools have the option of not testing some kids, so how accurate is this really? Also this program would have never come to be to begin with if Public schools were doing what they were suppose to be doing. This is like big brother checking up on them and making sure they are doing what they are suppose to. I agree so much attention is put on making sure that everyone is learning, which they have to do, that kids that are advanced are left out and frustrated at what is being offered to them at the schools. That is where the virtual schools are very nice, you can move at your own pace and also there are more classes available that the Evansville does not offer. These virtual schools are a excellent alternative to the public school system. It is nice parents have options. If anyone would like more info on the wkce testing( No child left behind) or virtual question the D.P.I. has excellent info on both and I would encourage people to check out their web site, you might be surprised at what you find
