I would like to say I am speechless, but I am to disgusted to be speechless. What is the point to 8 weeks of 4K???? Except of course to waste tax dollars. I could hardly believe it. What is the problem with just telling the administration NO. Its kind of funny, Heidi Carvin's comment after the vote, that kept the half day in place was ' I don't know how they think we will pay for it', or something to that effect.
So who or what is suppose to pay for this? I think Heidi Carvin and the school board are taking a big gamble, and this could be disastrous. The money just is not there.

Not only is the money not there, just the thought of now getting a kid ready for Kindergarten is stupid. Think about it we all went to Kindergarten to get ready for 1st grade (real school) now we need to get ready (4K) to get ready.

Heidi is sounding like a person just holding on. she is waiting for the schoolboard elections to go and she is holding out hope she can get some of her "peeps" in to keep this alive. The board should kill this idea now. Getting kids ready to get kids ready just sounds stupid.

As Jamie Fellows said 142 out of the 150 4 year olds are in some sort of daycare now. the 8 that are not is the equivelent to about 5% of kids. I know one of the kids not in daycare, there is no money issue there, just a stay at home mom, wonder homw many others are in the same boat.

Many disctricts of all sizes offer a summer school version of "Getting Ready for Kindergarten", for all kids, those in daycare, preschool, home, etc. It is voluntary, and in distrcits where I have worked, there has always been a waiting list. Parents just like thier kids getting a chance to see the inside of the rooms and the buildings where they will be spending their days. It can be a beneficial program. It is, however, not 4K and should not be considered as such.
I also have heard the the district is considering finding private funding for a scholarship porgram so that the 5-10% of kids who are not in preschool but whose parents would like the opportunity for thier child could access it. This was suggested repeatedly by the 4K committee and dismissed as often, and I am pleased to see another option being given consideration by the community. That might be the best solution yet.
It will always concern me when Ms. Carvin blends public and private sector issues haphazardly, however. She has more than once now spoken for a group and I am never sure if that group has her blessings to do so. She starts talking about charter schools and the need for more daycare - I would think she would have more to do with her time than contemplate these issues at this time.
