Evansville School board approves under 15 class list for HS.; Insists on detail for future decisions

At the Evansville School Board on Monday night, Supr. Carvin and the school staff asked for approval of classes for those where there were less than 15 students. The number had been 12, but the first action of the board was to raise it to 15. Supr.Carvin said that in later discussion, since the first reading of the policy was to raise it to 15, that governed the later discussion since a policy was effective after the first reading. Some board members disputed this and this may be up for future discussion.

After much discussion, the board was unhappy that the school staff did not have answeers as to what was available as alternatives for students for classes that were to be unavailable. Mr. Peirick spoke and indicated that this was an area that he was very familiar with at the college level and boards needed more information than they were getting as to impact of their decisons in order to do their job correctly.

All sorts of reasons were given why it had to be this way, but the board was insistent that the data needed to be given to the board so they could understand the impact of their decisions. In the end, they voted 5-2 to approve the list as requested.

  1. I would like to thank the Evansville School board for taking to the time to examine all the facts and knowing when they don't have enough information to make a decision on something. We as a community need to see more of this from them. Take the time to say, 'I want to know more, before we decide this.'
