Rant and Counter Rant on Impact of the Big Box Stores

Here is an interesting rant and counter rant on the big box stores in California and the nation.

I think Evansville is not considered to be a Big Box store city. Never will be. With the negativity on the council and the people involved, I am fairly sure we are always going to be the Grove.

anony are you kidding, that council may be negative but they would jump at the chance to bring a big box store to
Evansville, all they care about is the amount of tax money they can collect even if it means dumping on the small business's that have been here for years. No one is safe.

Anony here...I never mentioned Walmart as one big box store for Evansville. And having a decent hardware store is nice but expensive for little odds and ends. And I think downtown Evansville is dead anyway. Most people do their major shopping out of town at big box stores.

At the Common Council meeting on Sept. 13, Mayor Ringhand will ask the Common Council to approve her appointments to an ad hoc committee to study whether the City of Evansville should adopt regulations regarding "big box" retailers and, if so, what those regulations should be. Even though I tend to agree that the likelihood of a big box retailer choosing to locate here is small, it is healthy to address this issue in a calm and clear-headed manor before (on the off chance) it becomes a real issue. This is another example of implementing our new Smart Growth Comprehensive Plan.

Anony, you may have not mentioned walmart, but that is what walmart is, is a big box store. The hardware store
here in town for little odds and ends is not bad, cheaper than going to madison or janesville just for little odds and ends, gas is how much? But if you have something major and more than one thing to get than I agree you have to watch the bottom line, the bucks and you really can't do that here in town. However I agree with the other post on here about the ace hardware store and there customer service they are pretty good and can give a pretty decent explanation if you are sure how to do something. I kind of laugh at the home depot because they give these ' classes' on how to do things
but try to find someone just on their sales floor to answer a question and it's a crap shoot. I don't think the city is going to allow big box stores, they will fight about it among themselves for a while, thats just what they do they want to make it look good, like they are considering the pro's and cons's but from what I have noticed from both the planning commission and the city council is they have their minds made up before these meetings, alot of that push comes from mayor ringhand. The business's have her in their pockets. As for the downtown being dead, I some what agree, they are not making much gain never have, they get a new business in and one goes out. I think we are going to see more and more building on the east side, I think they should stop investing tif district money in the downtown, because even without a big box store coming in to town I just don't think the future is in the downtown. Oh yah, stop paying these business to stay in the
down town area, I think tax payers would appreciate that. They want to get some tax money into town, big tax money stop wasting your time on these little retail stores and get more industrial, not only tax money but jobs, to keep people in town and maybe more shopping in town. But they have not brought anymore industrial to Evansville in years, why not??? AND TO ANONY WHO POINTED OUT THE SPELLING AREA, GET OVER YOURSELF, SO PERFECT YOU DON'T POST YOUR NAME.

I think people should check out Mayor ringhands voting record. I have. There have been very very very few times since she has been in office that she has voted againest a building development or business. She usually leads the charge before the vote, almost implying how people should vote. They most def. talk about issues before the meetings, and after alot of times at the bar. The people who have had the guts to vote againest her and the majority of the pc or council and take a stand on the issues, have resigned because as we were told they are so sick of the b.s. that goes on in the council and planning commission. More issues should go for a public vote, and people who vote on the issues should not be allowed to profit from their vote, thats called fraud/kickbacks.
