Cindy Sheehan is not just a Gold Star War mother. She has in the act of challenging George Bush to declare what the meaning of her son's death was, provided a dramatic point of no return for George Bush. She says she will go mano a mano with him. So far, he is a no show.
There was a time in the Vietnam War when returning vets such as John Kerry spoke out agains the war. It is one thing for the public to speak against war in polls, but when the war widows and war mothers do not have meaning in the sacrifice, it spells real trouble.

They also realize that thats what this forum is for is opinions. If you want to make comments about other people have the guts to sign your name. Like we don't know who you are.

ReplyDeleteI think it is admirable what Cindy Sheehan is doing. I think too many people are not questioning the rhethoric from this administration. There have been enough changes in justifying the war that it is hard to believe anything they say. I think it is time that everyone stands up and brings some attention to opposing the Iraq war. There are candle light vigils in Madison at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday 8/17 (Olin park and the Capitol). Is anyone interested in gathering for a vigil at Lake Leota?

What is a counter-protest to a vigil for peace? A pro-war rally? Despite what may think of this woman's tactics, she wants to prevent more needless deaths. Why would anyone want form a "counter-vigil"?

This is pure spin by the RNC. If they tell something enough people believe it (saddam was tied to 9/11, saddam has WMD,etc.) There may be some people in the Sheehan family that disagree with Cindy. However, not all of them do. I heard her sister on the radio today voicing her support for Cindy, because the media has painted a picture of her family not supporting her. I think this would not be such a tough spot for Bush if he could give her a good answer. He cannot tell her why this is a just or noble cause. He can stick to the phrases that don't really have much meaning (stay the course, when Iraqis stand up, we will stand down,etc. etc.), but when it comes to a meaningful explanation there isn't one. There were no WMD, Saddam wasn't connected to Al Qaeda or 9/11, he wasn't threatening us. It's much easier to stick to the message without saying anything meaningful explain why we were lied into war. Free speech is a wonderful thing. Anyone who wants to support the President can. Fortunately, people are finally waking up as you can see by his falling poll numbers.
All Cindy has asked for is answers. Bush has failed to answer her questions. When people feel strongly about their opinions they are not afraid to face people. Bush knows what he did, and that is why he is AFRAID to meet with her, he know he lied and her son died because of it..

If you've been watching Hardball, you've seen some of our reports that dip into the vast NBC archives to put current political events in perspective with previous presidents, lawmakers, and etc. I'm excited to tell you that we are going to offer some of those same stories here on our blog. For example, for Hardball I've been working on a report that compares the challenges President Bush is facing with those of Harry S. Truman.
Truman was our 33rd President. He took over following the death in 1944 of President Roosevelt and had to deal immediately with a host of foreign policy issues. The video we have is remarkable. There was the conclusion of the war in Europe, the Potsdam conference when allied leaders (Truman, Churchill, Stalin...) decided how to handle a defeated Germany, and the dropping of atomic bombs in Japan. Three years later, in 1948, Truman held on to the Presidency by just four percentage points. Last fall, after four years dominated by 9-11, the invasion of Afghanistan, and the war in Iraq... President Bush held on to his presidency by three points. Like President Bush's critics, Harry Truman's considered him not up to the job of President. Truman was a folksy man who popularized simple phrases (i.e. "The buck stops here.") President Bush is a folksy man who tends to see the world in black and white.
There are other similarities as well... Despite a growing economy and job growth, President Bush's approval rating is falling because of problems in Iraq. President Truman's approval fell even lower because of the war in Korea. President Bush felt the sting of allegations that his White House leaked classified information. President Truman was hurt by allegations that his State Department was riddled with communists.
Today, historians regard Harry Truman as one of our nation's best Presidents. His huge U.S. investment in rebuilding post-war Japan and Germany paid off... and Truman's policy of containing Soviet expansionism was a role model throughout the cold war.

ReplyDeleteI can't speak for Cindy Sheehan, but I think she knew he wouldn't talk to her. Perhaps he would have had he known it was going to grow this large. I think her point is that he can say this is a noble war, but he can't explain why. She is putting him on the spot, because the supposedly "leftwing media" is not doing their job. I watched hardball tonight. What a joke. Nora O'Donnel was so slanted to the right that she should have been a guest, rather than a supposed journalist moderating a show. Matthews fails to ask the tough questions and accepts answers that dodge the question, with a "fair enough" response. But at least he stays somewhat in the middle.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Bush won't meet with Cindy because he is a liar. Liar's seldom want to face the truth, and admit their wrong doing, it's human nature. The only problem being he is the president and LIED, then LIED about his LIES. What is the U.S. death toll so far???? All based on his LIES.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Russ Feingold for suggesting a PULL OUT DATE. Thats the problem with Bush he had no plan. Just like a kid excited about doing something no real plan, he just wanted to do it.
ReplyDeleteWe as well support the troops but not Bush. These young men and Women are only doing as they are told. Our church proudly sends care packages every month, and do extra around the holidays. I think any intelligent person knows that the issues of supporting Bush and supporting the troops are two different things.
