Cold Weather Closing
We have received a few phone calls asking how we make the decision to close because of cold weather. In general, we will close if the wind chill enters the 10 minute frostbite zone of the National Weather Service Wind Chill Chart.

This morning, we were right on the edge of the range. The winds were fairly calm, but the temperature was -15. We had been told that our diesel fuel was good to -25. However, the busses would not start this morning so we cancelled school. Our bus company is trying to add a hotter blend. It is likely we will not know until 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning whether or not we will be able to start the busses.
We notify television stations first, then radio stations. If often takes a long time to get through to the radio stations: WIBA/WTSO/Z104/MAD/WCIZ/WIBA, WCLO/WJVL, and WKPO/WTIK. At the same time, the notification goes through our K-12 Now System and is posted on our district website.
If you do not have access to a television or computer, you may also try calling the direct number for your childs school. We will put an announcement on the voice mail.

Does anyone else find it to be insane the lengths Evansville goes to have students attend school? As of 11pm the night before, 58 schools were already closed, and in the morning, 124 were closed. Yet Evansville is saying that if the buses would have started, school would have gone on? Something isn't right here.
ReplyDeleteWhat about those students who drive to school, if their car doesn't start, what should they do?
Also, what about the students who WALK to school. Should they have to go through the bitter cold, have the chance of frost bite, and cold/flu just to make it to school because Evansville goes on powertrips with school attendance?
1:123... ya. Evansville, learn to respect the health of your students.
Yeah the schools should be closed for tomorrow now (7:30 p.m. Monday) so parents can plan accordingly and the children can be safe.

Hopefully Evansville follows suit.
