Recently the Florence County School Board voted to dissolve the school district rather than continue in a sub-standard budget. The problem is that in small rural school districts, even with rising property values, if there is falling enrollment, the state funding formula is like a crushing hammer that pressures them to merge.
Until now, there has been some limit of transfers out of a school district, but the problem may get worse after that cap is lifted.
Thus, the problem of Florence, is as close as our neighbor, Albany schools. The problem is very widespread in Wisconsin.

First of all I thought they were going to look to extend the cap, did that not happen? Secondly I think schools need to operate realistically. It would be nice for schools to be able to pay their teacher's top dollar, that is not always possible. I have read several school board minutes where Heidi Carvin has stated that our administrators and teachers are under paid according to other districts. I think their was even talk of hiring someone to consult with them on this issue. Where are they getting the money for the consultant? Just a example of waste.
ReplyDeleteIf the Gov. had not done what he did with the budget,Evansville would be making some very tough choices right now. I would like to quote from the article mentioned in the post.
"We shouldn't have to run a public education system on the basis of repeated near catastrophes and last-minute, nightmarish appeals to voters," said Jack Norman. They need to start operating responsiblely.
