I think that Julie and this program is one of the best things to ever happen to this town. IT was long needed. It helps alot of people.
ReplyDeleteI hope everyone cleans out their closets and can donate a jacket or two for the Koats for Kids..
If you are shopping for school supplies pick up a few extra for those in need, a pretty easy thing to do.
Good Work Julie
You know, I support this program. When I saw it, I thought, "Wow, that's so nice"
ReplyDeleteNow, my husband lost his job last year and returned to school with to complete his undergraduate degree at UW-Madison. I am the sole supporter of the family. I applied for reduced lunch and filled out the app.
When I opened the decision letter, I saw our child had been approved for FREE lunch.
FREE. The word FREE practically blinked on the page.. ha ha, you're losers, low income. You are to be pitied. Can't even feed your kids, why did you breed them?'
We are a "normal' married family, have a very modest home, drive ten year old cars...little debt.. but I never thought we were this low on the income scale. Shocker. From middle class comfy to "needs help" all in a year.
I wish I could take advantage of this program... but I am afraid. I am afraid teachers will see the backpack of food and think, "poor kid... parents must not be educated" or assume my child may be a troublemaker or need special ed. My kid was reading at the age of three, and is so bright. We try so hard to educate our children outside of the classroom... museums, enriching books, nurturing environment, exercise and good food.
I fear it may all be tossed aside if someone thinks of us as a 'free lunch' family.
I know this says more about me than about the system, about my insecurities.
I know money does NOT equal good parenting. I know, because apparently, we are poor AND good parents. But I fear judgement from others on that- and I don't want my son bear to the brunt.
