I have often wondered about liability with not just the volunteer firedept but the paramedics as well. They receive no where near the training as if they had gone to a two year school or better. I think eventually the volunteer depts wil be gone.

next time you need a parmedic, tell the dispatcher that you want one with two years of school or better. The liability issue probably falls under the good sam act.

No actually if the paramedics screw up they and the city can be sued. No act of any kind is going to get someone off if they are negligent. However people with years of training can screw up just as easily as someone with only basic classes. I want to know that we have competant paramedics and firefighters and more education never hurt anyone. There are many different grants the city can apply for to pay for education for f.d. or paramedics. Don't hide behind the good sam act, thats almost scarey you would say that, almost like we can do what we want because of the good sam act. Family of attorneys so I can tell you for a fact it happens all the time. Education is KEY

The good sam act was not really designed with Paramedics in mind, because they are suppose to know what they are doing. It was designed more for someone like me , if I come along and find you laying in the road, if any common sense leaves me in my state of panic and I move you, thus doing further dmg to you,, or if I give other aide and something goes wrong. Just for the record, unless there is a tornado or other freak thing coming I would not move some one. Paramedics are suppose to be trained as so these examples I gave don't happen . I see nothing wrong with them taking the volunteers we have and giving them first shot at paid positions with training if we ever go away from the volunteer status.

Then 1st anon you can pay out the ass on your next tax bill. We do not have paramedics in Evansville we have EMT's. If the situtation is dire and you need extra assistance a Paramedic crew will call called from one of the surrounding cities to assist in your care. I do not think the volunteer dept's will ever be gone, as this is EMT week maybe a thank you to these people would not be a bad idea

  6. The post was about a situation in Milton, as described in the Janesville Gazette==== the questions it raises are relevant to bugeting space as well as personnel for the future====we have been very fortunate in the past to have these EMT's. It would be helpful for folks to know the difference between EMT and paramedic---the term "assist in your care" is too vague. So---there is gratitude and at the same time wonder whether,if and when costs might spike due to possible salaried staffing.

You just picked one hell of a time to post it.

The difference between a Paramedic and EMT is essentially the ability to break a persons skin (IV's etc.).

We like Milton, Orfordville, Footville, and most every small town have an EMT service with compitent people who receive year round refresher training.

I am wondering what Mitch's fear is ... he is obviously scared or nervous about something. I don't think any post on here said anything bad about our excuse me , e.m.t.'s. But times are changing and this city is growing. There are city's and towns around us who are starting to look at this issue as there towns get bigger and there is more and more technology
education is key. I think is Evansville at some point goes to paid paramedics I agree let the current e.m.t.s have first crack at it. Just because people are pondering a question does not mean someone is not appreciated. Relax.

Congrats on the EMT week you are appreciated.

I think eventually it will be paid paramedics, maybe not for years but as this town gets bigger things will change. My sister lives near by and there city recently went to paid paramedics. I think its important to realize though that this is not all about care given, its a big picture from what I have read numerous issues not just one. I personally don't see Evansville seriously looking at this for years, but if we continue to grow at the rate we have been it may be sooner instead of later. Our E.M.T.'s do a great job no one is saying they don't . But with things changing and the growth we have had that is a area that may have to be addressed at some point. Happy E.M.T. Week and thanks for your time and devotion.
