Dreams have always been different from plans. Agreed? Anyway, one political pundit last week was heard to say that in the past in Evansville, what was called a "plan" for long range capital projects was really just a list of things that would be nice if we happened to have the money. A wish list.
That comment is helpful in reviewing the list of projects that will appear tonight at the Parks Board meeting--if you go, and I would encourage it if you have ideas about the future for Evansville parks and the priority of things.
One particular item jumps right out at you when you read the long term capital plan--The 2.5 million dollar cost for dredging Lake Leota. I have the audio of the dredger, and I know that as time passes and cost rises, the cost is going to be higher. The city has learned a lot by draining, and by draining the lake every three years or so, I wonder if this could be a low cost and affordable solution---spending millions just seems a dream to me. How about you?
I say this because the library addition on the long range capital plan is also about 2.5 million dollars. What if you had to choose between a library addition or dredging the lake. Which would you pick?
It is time for doing the priority thing. The time to start is now and the park list tonight is an opportunity for citizens to be heard.
