I have taken some teasing lately about my posts of the Karoke from the 4th of July---the graph above gives you some perspective of the relative popularity of politics v karoke. There is just nothing that compares to American Idol....or Evansville Idol. Look for even fuller coverage next year.

In Rock County, an estimated 29,108 individuals will receive an increase of $25 in weekly unemployment benefits. In addition, an estimated 6,674 individuals will be provided with additional weeks of benefits through December 31, 2009. "

OpEd; Sotomeryer must admit she was WRONG about New Haven Firefighters--the Supreme Court was RIGHT
Judge Sotomeyer, in the hearings starting today, must admit she will comply with the wisdom of the Supreme Court----and follow the rule of law--and that law now specifies that she was WRONG in the New Haven fire fighters case, and that the court must be race NEUTRAL and give all races equal opportunity. It is not about a WISE LATINA being better...it is about being racially blind....and fair. Make a note of it.

Mailbag; I and E Club Meets TONIGHT: July 8th Meeting features Inventor
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at the Eager Economy Building, 7 East Main Street, Evansville, at 6:30 PM.
Our guest speaker this month will be Evansville's very own Mike Hasz. Mike has been an independent inventor for about 12 years. He will talk about the trials and challenges he has encountered while filing for the patents, of which Mike now owns several. He will offer some suggestions and tips that worked for him, and also discuss some things that did not work so well. You won't want to miss this! (Mike is also the Club Facility/Refreshment VP). Come network and collaborate with like-minded individuals - share resources, exchange ideas, and be mentored. Refreshments for the July meeting will be sponsored by Allen Realty, Inc.

Up to $1,000 will be provided for tuition, fees, books and supplies. Eligible areas of study are those identified by the regional boards as high demand occupations, such as health care, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology and energy.
The grants will cover short-term training, enabling individuals to earn certificates or degrees. The grant program also includes registered apprenticeships in high-demand occupations.
In addition to the grants, individuals can receive up to $250 to cover the cost of tools and uniforms, exam fees, transportation and child care.
Individuals should apply for grants through their regional workforce development boards by visiting their local Job Center . Find the nearest Job Center or call toll-free 888-258-9966.

Art Appreciation for Young Children: Thursday, July 23, 2009--FREE
Art Appreciation 101 for Young Children which will be held on Thursday, July 23rd from 6:30-8 PM at Evansville High School . Believe it or not, even infants can begin to appreciate art. Learn how to introduce art appreciation and talk with children of all ages about art made by them and others. Try creative ways to react to art. This workshop is part of Penn State University ’s Better Kids Care Series.
Continuing education certificates will be available. Childcare will be provided for those that register at least 24 hours in advance.

After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, New York scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to the conclusion, that their ancestors already had a telephone-network more than 100 years ago.
Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, in the weeks that followed, a California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story in the LA Times read: ' California archaeologists, finding traces of a 200 year old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers.'
One week later, The Courier Hub, a local newspaper in Wisconsin, reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet in his pasture near Stoughton , Wisconsin , Ole Olson, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Ole has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Wisconsin had already gone wireless."

OpEd: Review of Public Enemies: The Close ups Examined
Nobody loves closeups like the Observer. And nobody loves overhead Busby Berklie like the Observer. And yes I like the black and white films of the the 30's...but...was the film shot with too much closeups??....I would have loved a Busbie Berkley overhead of the dance scene, but ...my daughter who was in the scene says that the actual setting of the scene was so large that it was not possible. Overhead for the bank robbery but not the ballroom just seems unfair.I also wonder whether it could have been a bit lighter. Seemed too dark. I, in my old age, had a problem seeing the details. I hope they lighten it on the dvd release.

The gangsters had a major presence in St. Paul, Mn. during the 1930's----and in addition to the bars and nightclubs to frequent in St. Paul, on the weekends, during the heat of the summer, they motored out to the lakes---on the East to White Bear Lake and to the West, Lake Minnetonka. As a boy, I remember vividly remember my grandmother pointing out the cottage that Ma Barker rented out for one summer---She should know. She rented it to her. ...right on the path above the dock on the east side of White Bear Lake in Mahtomedi. Ah the glory days. The days of speakeasies....and much more. I know because one had once been in the apartment building I lived in when I was a boy. Tucked in the basement. Did not seem very stylish. But then things were a bit different from the movies.
It must be remembered that the action by the FBI to kill John Dillinger was purposeful drama---because up until that time the public enemies were considered the banks and not the gangsters---at least there was real mixed feelings. The rate of foreclosure was very high and there had been a bank and foreclosure holiday---
Thus the perfect timing of "Public Enemies" being released today.....just in time for the coming foreclosure holiday....Sen Clinton mentioned and advocated for it during her campaign....and if the reworking of mortgages does not work, look for it to happen again....
We are today, as then, filled with a glorification of "Gangsta" and "Thriller" but want to be law abiding most of the time, at least when convenient.

Subject: Analogies & Metaphors
Every year, English teachers from across the USA can submit their collections of actual analogies and metaphors found in high school essays. These excerpts are published each year to the amusement of teachers across the country. Here are last year's winners.
1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.
2. His thoughts tumbled in his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.
3. He spoke with the wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.
4. She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.
5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.
