funny wording, what the article left out was they could spend UP to five million without going to referendum, had this passed.
ReplyDeleteI think they thought better of the idea and realized the heat they would take when all of Evansville came to find out what they did.
Fred what were you thinking?
And as it stands right now there is no limit on what can be spent without a referendum.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed at how many people are looking at this backwardly, including people who spoke last night. This ordinance would have been a restriction on the Council, not a free pass for them.
Yeesh.
A lot of back peddling going on with the sponsors of this ordinance; Mason back peddled and left Fred out there to take the heat. Why do you sponser something that you don't believe in? It's called election year and all the heat that this brought up forced the candidate (Mason) to change his tune.
ReplyDeleteI personally would have liked to see them cap it. I have said before there is no reason to give them a 'big' allowance. Its called budgeting.
ReplyDeleteI applaud Mason he knew that it was not right.
Mason and Fred doing the honorable thing by bringing the topic up for discussion. I don't think Mason was looking for it to pass but he wanted to get the citizen input.
ReplyDeleteThen four people showed up to speak. Two of them didn't understand what the ordinance was intended to do.
I think part of the confusion was the way in the last few weeks it was explained by the city.
ReplyDeleteFirst it was ' let us spend up to 5 million without citizen input.'
then it was ' we only have to go to referendum for over five million'
Which lead one to think the city had 5 million laying around to play with and no worrys.
There may have only been four people at the meeting who spoke against it, but from the people , alders I talked with quite a few people made contact by phone, email, person what ever it may be.
People don't have to go to meetings , its just important that they make their wishes or concerns know to their alderpersons.
So the fact only four people spoke, is a small factor. The people of evansville spoke and the council heard them loud and clear.
