    This looks to me to be legitimate data mining. I've done some in the past. You use statistical techniques to find correlations between different data elements by examining large numbers of data elements.

    Like any complex calculation intensive "computer modeling" it is easy to get garbage in - garbage out, and real tough to isolate the independent variables. Quite often the whole business is gone after dishonestly; Michael E. Mann is notorious in climatology.

    Like Mark Twain put it, "Figures don't lie, but liars figure", and "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics."
