WSJ: It's a Bull Market for Long Johns-----

This week, The Observer has been filling in taking some orders for a mail order firm---and it is easy to describe the panic buying I have seen in the northern tundra---as in folks from Wasilla, Alaska calling for special wool lined work pants, or women all over the country ordering long johns, even with expedited delivery.

One trucker who was on a big rig in Alaska---dryly said to me--" Up here....we learn at an early age....ya take care of the assets....or ya die."

Need I say he asked for next day air delivery.

So---there is good news for those retailers who have bulked up in the inventory that has counted....

This reminded me of a part in the critically acclaimed movie Joe Dirt. When Joe asked why Kicking Wing why he only had a limited selection of fireworks at his struggling fireworks stand, the response was:

Kicking Wing: No... because snakes and sparklers are the only ones I like.
Joe Dirt: Well that might be your problem, it's not what you like, it's the consumer.

It's all too simple. Provide services and sell what people want. There is a reason that horse drawn carriages do not sell as well as they did 120 years ago. That is also why bottom feeders like John Camutta ( debt consolidation )spam me everyday.

The economy is all about confidence. I don't feel reassured when the government spends money we don't have to create a smoke and mirrors economy.
This "downturn" is the economy's way of culling the herd. It's tough love, but throwing money at a problem is not the answer. I don't credit or blame either political party on this issue. The housing foreclosure situation needs to flush itself out, delaying the inevitable helps no one and costs everyone. Build some new roads, bridges, schools, give local governments some money, but don't spend money on something you can't see or trace.
