Gazette Corner: Evansville Building Permits sign of Times

I am not aware of any statement in the Smart Growth plan indicating that the city should enact a limit on the number of building permits. The community did express a concern about the extremely high population growth rate the city was experiencing during the recently past housing boom, but the strategy the city employed was to limit the number of annexations and new subdivision to be platted during the first 10 to 15 years of the plan and to include limits on the number of lots developed each year in the development agreements for the new subdivisions. These limits still allowed for robust growth. Obviously, the current growth rate falls well under the limitations placed in the development agreements. The city's policies did not cause the collapse in growth--the national housing market did that.

Moderate steady growth is a good thing. Extremely rapid growth and no growth are bad, especially from the school district's point of view.
