Mailbag: Reader reports theft overnight from car---stay alert--lock the cars

(Ed.note: This theft reported did occur on Liberty Street. If you have any info on this or any other similar theft, contact the Evansville Police Dept.)

Just wanted to spread the word to any Evansville email addresses that I have here at work that someone broke into our truck in the driveway last night and took the console between the seats. There was an iPod and about $10 in change in there. The police said someone else also called and said they almost caught a short, stocky man (not a kid) trying to steal from their car last night too but he got away. They didn't give any other description or where that house was, but I did find the empty console down our sidewalk just a house away.

400 block South Second Street. Tuesday morning, 5:35 a.m. Truck parked in road, unlocked. Husband left for work, saw CD/stereo missing. Call cops. Neighbor came out, said she saw someone out front at 5:30 a.m. pretending to go through recycling maybe for cans (gave great description, won't reveal so he can be caught.) Said when he saw her he headed south. Soon after cop leaves to search for him, stereo is found a block away in the bushes. Thief must have known he was seen, got scared, dumped the stereo. He will be caught. This is a small town, we watch out for each other.

Me again, South Second Street. Be careful in thinking he was short, stocky if you didn't see him. This may not be the same description our neighbor gave (again, am not giving description out yet). The stocky part could have been the stuff under his shirt. The short part could have been wrong too.

Me again, South Second Street. Husband saw the man at All N One, followed him home (south edge of town), called the cops. Don't know the legalities, but I would assume they'd need some legal reason to be able to search -- and he dumped our stereo so even if they did search his place, he wouldn't have that in his home. We're hoping anyone who has been robbed has called the pd to report it, so if they do a search they'll find stolen items. Again, the first description given MAY NOT be accurate.

I just heard about another theft overnight on the north side of town near the park. Stolen were some CDs, misc change.

Found last week at south side Wind Prairie park: golden watch and (now) empty CD case. Call the Evansville PD if you are missing one. Perhaps it is the work of our early morning thief on his way back to his house.
