Dateline Oregon, Wis: "The Village is considering buying the houses in the flood plain"

On Page A7 of the Wisconsin State Journal this morning, is an article on the problems of flooding in Oregon. You may have to pick up a paper copy to get the story. There was an online version of this story, but I cannot find it now on the web site. If anyone can find the online version, please let me know.

Behind the possible deletion of the online version of this story, I surmise a vigorous debate about what Oregon is going to do to address the flooding concerns of residents that have built on the floodplain.

Stay tuned to The Evansville Observer. We bring you the news.

  1. It appears to me when I look at where the flooding is located on the map of the Village of Oregon that the area of flooding was developed many decades ago--it is near the "downtown." There probably no storm water management, apart from standard storm sewers in the streets, back when this area was developed. One TV news story mentioned this area had flooded about 10 years ago, and the city attempted some flood control measures, but the measures were not adequate to deal with the recent rains.

Municipalities get into a situation where they consider buying houses only when houses have been damaged several times by flooding. Thankfully, that hasn't happened (yet?) on the west side of Evansville.

If the city can't fix this or control it then thats what they need to do for the folks MOST effected on the west side.

ONE more thing someone told me that when you pass over the culvert out on porter rd ,, that whole area out there and back has natural springs.. They will never get it ' dry' if thats the case.
