Mailbag: Grandma writes: Re: Cellphone use while driving

( I received this short note this morn from Grandma re concern for the grandkids driving with cellphones. Grandma is 82))

I just heard, yesterday, why you should not drive while using a cell phone. It is because you go slower and tie up traffic. It does not matter if you hold it or have is on speaker………it is the conversation that slows you down. They have determined that your reflexes, while talking on a phone, are as slow as a Senior Citizens. I do not know if there has been any research on what occurs when a Senior uses a phone while driving. If I come up with that I will pass it on……….

To be instructive, I wrote:

It's just math. If a 16 year old with a cell phone becomes a 65 year old driver when using a cell phone, ya just add the difference in years, 50 or so to the years. Thus is you were using a cellphone, it would be like a person 132 yrs old was driving. Wow. That does make the point. Yes. The Observer
