The past several years have seen disappointing circulation numbers for many US print papers. The usual way of measuring success was that of "paid circulation." Even papers that had online distribution or unpaid circulation were not given any credit for this when calculating their market share, or in more money terms--their charges for advertising.
Click on the post for an article which suggests US papers are beginning to include their online distribution in their numbers.
At the Evansville Observer, our site meter is public, and displays who visits the site, as well as the historical visits and page views. It would be nice if online media in Wisconsin made their circulation transparent to the viewers.
It would also be helpful if local dailies kept their stories on file, or archive, for a longer time. The storage costs are minimul, and many times, stories are hot off the press, and then alas, deleted. So much for the test of time.
