Tragic Deaths of Young DeForest Teens highlight 16 yr old driver risk.

The tragic death of three DeForest high school students recently highlights the dangers of 16 year old drivers. According to the graduated license regulations, a 16 yr old can only have one unrelated passenger in the car between 5am and midnight.

How often are the regulations for 16 yr old drivers enforced by their parents?

I don't think its a always a matter of parents 'enforcing' this, once the child leaves the home, parents don't always know the specifics of what their child is doing, and any parent who trys to say ' I know what my child is doing at all times.' is lying, or very naive. You can talk and preach all you want to your kids about the dangers of driving, drinking, drugs etc the choice in the end is theirs. I have a neighbor who actually goes around saying things about other people's kids, ' oh they are a bad kid' goes as far not to let her child stay at their house,,etc, yet her son is doing the same things that she looks down on these other kids for. He is out there smoking pot, and drinkin right along with ' these bad kids' ,, we just shake our heads and think wake up. Its a tragic what happened to these young men, if one could only turn back the hands of time. I only hope young people pay attention to this accident, but I don't they will remember this, but I doubt they will for more than 5 minutes because it did not effect them directly.

The point is that there are rules about who can be in the car when a 16 year old is driving, and what time that person is driving. The parents, who are the legal guardians and set the rules for someone age 16 do have options for enforcing those rules, and maybe saving the life of their child. It would be irresponsible to be the parent of a 16 year old, and not make sure the laws are enforced with that child.

No the point is regardless of the rules once your child leaves your house you can not say for sure what that child is really doing. You may think you know because you will like to think your child obeys, and you have instilled values in them that they will live up to with or without you there, but the truth is they are young adults, and don't always make the best choices regardless of what you may have drained into their heads.
We don't know that these parents of these young men did not tell them over and over again no more than one other person in the car at a time. The REAL point is these young men are gone.

It's wrong to say these kids would be alive today if their parents had enforced rules upon them. It's wrong to blame the parents.
