This morning was clear and bright, and I stepped out to walk a bit and ran into my neighbor Wayne.
"What do you have for me this morn?" I asked.
Wayne just smiled. Then he spoke:
"What's the difference between Sturgis before the bike rally and Evansville today?
"I give up. What is the answer?", I asked.
"NOTHING"---Wayne replied. Then he went on......
"See that intersection. It turns RIGHT there. It always will. We need to bring the people. Like Sturgis. "
Sorry this town does not need a bike rally.
ReplyDeleteSo Evansville should invite thousands of bikers here for a week?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that is going to fly.
Yup, I agree I am sure that the new Night Owl and the Coffee Shop will bring tourism in to town.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why any town that is desperately trying to save it's down town would even consider holding any kind of event where people would spend their money and have a great time, then to top it off want to come back year after year.
I would just say NO to any event that might bring some property tax relief.
Maybe we could get the Red Hat club to come for tea, that would bring in about 2 dollars in revenue.
¨ $12.38 million in taxable sales. South Dakota state sales taxes collected on those sales totaled $495,220. Sturgis city sales tax collected totaled $256,683 and South Dakota Department of Tourism tax collected was $123,566.
ReplyDelete¨ Total taxes collected for the 2006 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally were $875,469.
WILL NOT FLY.
ReplyDeleteEnd of disscussion.
There is a lot more to just bringing in money. My sister lives out there and there is alot more to this than just bringing in money. They may bring in the money but they also dump a ton of money into it before and after the event . NOT to mention some of the things people put up with when this thing is going on. I agree with anony, this is not going to happen in Evansville nor should it. There are many other ways to bring in money with out something like this. I think its bad enough when I group goes through town just passing through I can't imagine having to put up with them for a weekend much less a week.
ReplyDeleteThe way to bring people to this town and have a lasting effect is to bring business's to town that have a draw. New, different , unique business's . I shudder when I think about there being any type of Bike Rally here. I have been around enough of them through life to know that is not what I want for our town and if put to a vote I think the majority of people would agree, almost over whelming to a point. It would be nice to be able to get shops like stoughton or new glarus have. They have alot of foot traffic . How ever I almost think its a losing battle, the down town is dead. The city can keep throwing money at it but its dead. If they had any real interest in saving the down town they would not have approved the permits for building on the east side, but by doing that they probably would have just forced some of those business's to close and leave town. I will state again the last thing this town needs is a bike rally, No Way.
ReplyDeleteanon, End of discussion for you maybe!
ReplyDeleteIt is a blog where the moderator has the final word.
But of course we don't need 800,000 dollars plus in our economy. And there lies the difference between Sturgis, Daytona, Mrytle Beach, they want the 800,000 (net) they want they're local economy to thrive.
ALso you missed Waynes point,,, the road turns north and so does the traffic, right out of town. I supppose they should name that street after you "Take your money to Madison Street".
The question was " What's the difference BEFORE the bike rally?
ReplyDeleteTourism in Sturgis is pretty much slow all year, except for the 1 week when most of South Dakota says WELCOME BIKERS WE APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS!
What about the damage these bikers do when they are there? I realize they are not all ill behaved but quite a few are. They think they are doing this little town such a favor by being there they can do what ever they want. Its scarey to think about some of the things that some do. Evansville does not have a high crime rate and we do not need to invite situations that may cause it to rise even for a week or weekend regardless of the money. That is one of the main reasons that the city no longer sponsors the carnival at the fourth of july, or they had stopped for a number of years is the trouble they had with the people who ran it. The city needs to find long term solutions for making revenue without the hassle a bike rally would bring. I think the bike rally is best left in Sturgis and Daytona and where ever else they have been. I would much rather pay my taxes as they are than put up with a bike rally and besides the figures you gave is not net, my sister lives out there and has many storys about the money spent and what was really made. Like I said nice figure but it does not account for what they spent, and the damage that was done. The figure you gave won't even begin to put a dent per family in what we pay for taxes. NOT WORTH IT. I agree with the second anon. This will never happen. Will not fly. You should just be greatful there are places that will put up with it.
ReplyDeleteI think its important to remember that not everyone thinks the same things or fun or ' awsome' If you like to ride bike thats great, I hope you are respectful when you do so. But don't try to push what you like spending your free time doing on everyone else in this town. I for one (and obviously others from what I see on this site alone) what never want a bike rally to come to this town. From the experiences I have had I find the majority of bikers to have a attitude about their ' rights' and forget the rest of us have rights as well. My brother went to Sturgis one time and said never again as he could not believe the behavior of some. Besides that point where would this town put all those people? Let them camp at the park??? OH ____ NO. Then if they have to leave town to find some place to stay kind of defeats the idea of them spending all that money in town. I know there are some people in Sturgis that if they could figure out a way to do away with this yearly event if they could.they would . NOT everyone thinks its so great. So go ride your bikes, be respectful, but don't expect us to be excited about the idea for you.
ReplyDeleteNO BIKES WHAT SO EVER!
ReplyDeleteSo the next time I see all the spandex at the real coffee I want them swept out of town. You know all the Damage the have done to my eyes with their packages just sitting there and the traffic jams they cause. Who cares about the 1.75 they bring into town.
Just listen to all of you, I would guss the posters are part of the Historic Preservation Committee
no one is saying it has to be a bike ralley. there just pointing out we need to bring buisness to town. nit just sit back and have every one just pass on through.
