There is more need here than simply finding out who provided the alcohol this time. Apparently there was another incident in feb for this kid. There seems to be some serious substance abuse going on with some of our kids in Evansville, and hopefully this tragedy will focus some light on that before we lose anyone else.
Always someone elses fault isin't it Watchin. This is a time to teach your own children the dangers of drinking and driving and you feel we need to find the source of the alcohol??
I think both watching and the last two post anon and two fisted slopper are both correct. Parents can not talk enough about the dangers of both alcohol and drugs. Its true this young man chose to drink, nobody forced it on him. However the person who supplied the alcohol has to be held responsible as well. Just like when we are seeing people held responsible when they are supplying drugs to someone and that someone dies. If people were not supplying alcohol to these minors they would not be drinking. We personally don't keep alcohol in our home, I think it sends the wrong message, do as I say not as I do type of thing. It was wrong for his past issues to be brought into this tragic story, what difference does it make but add to a family's heartache. People might not want judge quite so quickly as I can say from what I know for a fact there is a very slim margin in that high school that do not drink. My daughter is going to be in junior high this next year and I am very scared for her as it seems to start as early as this age group, not just alcohol and drugs but sexual activity as well. I talk, talk , talk to my kids and I am still afraid, you can't be with them 24 hours a day. I laugh at some of the comments I have heard from different people the last few days, acting as though there kids don't drink, when I know better as I have a 16 year old son I hear and see alot. Parents need to wake up and not just think that just because there kids have never been caught before they are not drinking, or doing drugs. This family has lost there child, and this young man paid a dear price for his mistake. Have some compassion for the family, and put your self in there shoes. Be grateful its not your family. I am honestly surprised something like this did not happen sooner, for as much drinking as these kids do. Hug your kids today, count your blessings. The most important things parents can do is set good examples, and talk, talk, talk... Lets hope Evansville never has a tragedy like this again. My prays and thoughts are with his family.
Not speaking of behavior for fear of a family is part of the problem. We can keep it a "dirty little secret" but then more tragedies may occur.
We can refuse to discuss sporting team parties for fear the team may be banned from a game. We can not discuss the bad conduct at the skateboard park for fear the Skateboard club may feel falsely accused.
We can overlook the teenagers who blow through the 4-way stop on Main for fear they may lose their license and their parents may have to drive them to school or worse yet they may have to walk.
Some teenagers in Evansville are endangering themselves and others by their behavior.
And that's an inconvenient truth.
I respect that this may not be the time to discuss it, but the discussion needs to happen at some point.
Actually you are missing my point, that this is the time to discuss the drinking issues, with out dragging any one person through the mud in the process.
Yesterday's Evansville Review reported that four Evansville adults, Ben Barber, Cole Maybee, Mike Mauer, and Anthony Harried, were arrested and charged with "encouraging or contributing alcohol to minors" on April 8th. Several days later Barber was arrested again -- this time for house burglary and possession of drug paraphenalia.
It's clear we have some bad actors in Evansville. They prey on the young, particularly the rebellious young. As long as kids aren't honest with themselves, with their parents, and with law enforcement and other authorities, the bad actors will go unpunished.
There's plenty of blame to go around in this tragic incident, and it's enhanced by a general attitude of "It's not my problem". It's a problem for all of Evansville, and we need some honest community-wide soul-searching, if we are to minimize future tragedies like this most recent one.
A search on the Wisconsin Circuit Court Access website http://wcca.wicourts.gov shows four entries of "Rock County of vs. Dane A. Wourms". Charges filed on March 2nd 2007 were violations of Mandatory Seatbelts Requirement, Reckless Driving-Endanger Safety, Operating While under Influence and Operating with PAC .10 or more. Today, April 27th 2007, the day of his funeral, a Status conference was to be held at the courthouse. Sad.
i have no problem posting on this site as i have read it before. i am the sister of dane, my name many of you may or may not know is lacy. i have been reading in here some comments that are rather tasteless and unkind but i can also understand your concern. i would however like to point out that a juvenile's record is supposed to be confidential but apparently that just flew out the window when he died. i would also like to point out that dane was NEVER CONVICTED of any of the alleged crimes against him and it will never be determinded if he was guilty as all charges have been dismissed. i would also like people to look into the fact as to why the police didnt respond out to my parents house when my mother called 911? it took rock county 23 minutes to get there, dane was already dead at that time. and where was the evansville officer? well he was sitting at the bowling alley chatting it up with his buddies. it took the county 6 minutes to ask for assistance from evansville when just two weeks before his death it took evansville only 3 minutes to respond to the house. also, since when was it acceptable to have only one officer on duty on a saturday nite? how can you protect a community that has a large bar crowd and you know someone will drink and drive with only one officer there to catch them, and when they do get one they have to spend at least an hour and a half with them when u calculate time it takes for them to transport them to jail. also, why dont all of you go down to the police department and look at the unmarked squad car that officer fields was driving that nite and take a look at the large scratch mark on the bumper and then look at danes rear bumper and see the black marks on it? i think this town needs to question a lot of actions by this police department in the last few months. i think its gettin way out of control. how many of you knew that they just lost a federal lawsuit? how much did that cost? over 200,000 when you add in attorney fees. theres your tax dollars being well spent. also, during the pursuit several policy violations occured and i intend on proving it. i have all the evidence i need at this point. as for dane's actions the nite he died, they really dont matter. he made a mistake and paid the ultimate price. his debt is paid in full. i only hope that you teach you kids to wear their seatbelt and never to drink and drive. in this tragedy i can only ask that a lesson be learned.
My thoughts and prays go out to his family. He was a very nice polite young man.
ReplyDeleteMy prays go to his family. What a tragedy. They need to find who gave him the alcohol.
