I also think there should be the same type of '
health impact fee' on any type of alcohol and the
money should go to the family's who have lost someone
one to a idiot, drunk driver.

Yes, I think they should. Fair is Fair, just like cigs, Alcohol is choice, and because of some people's poor decisions to drive after drinking innocent people die. Money can never replace people's family's but can go along way in helping to pay funeral costs, medical cost. I also think that it should be mandatory jail time on the first offense, because to many of these drunks just don't get it.

Anony no.2, this is anony no.1, don't get me wrong, I drink, I don't smoke. When i drink I drink responsibly. So this tax would effect me as well, its not that I am againest drinking in general.

While drunk driving is a tragedy,it is ridiculous to propose a tax to cover punitive damages. That is a civil matter, not a government mandate.

Also, it is not the government's responsibility to finance tragedies. I realize that sounds harsh, but consider this- let's say they tax alcohol and give money to drunk driving victims, great. What about those who die at the hands of illegal drug users? Or old people who mix up the gas/brake pedal ? Or illegal immigrants who can't read a traffic manual, or a couple of teenagers getting it on in midhighway? The families of these victims suffer just as much, but because alcohol wasn't related, they don't get compensation.

As long as there are stupid people, there will be stupid behaviors that endanger people. As citizens we have to cross our fingers and watch out for ourselves, because it is a joke to think our government is going to care about our family's safety. Government cares about one thing; preserving government and keeping tax dollars flowing.

If we are going to tax alcohol, we should tax cheese, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, beef, ice cream, and butter... because obesity, heart disease, and strokes kill just as many people as smoking and drunk driving. Not to mention the horrible tax drain of medicaid treating all these conditions, on the public tax dollar, when the ill people could prevent it all by EATING BETTER.

Sorry there are some things you can control, like alcohol sales, and what is charged. Your examples of drug dealers, and people mixing up the gas pedal with the brake there is no way to control that. Taxing alcohol would be very simple and would benefit those family's who have lost someone to a drunk driving death should be compensated from the tax on the sale of alcohol.

It looks like someone does not want to have to be responsible for anything.
